Purpose/Objective of the Role

TNG Film Club for elders are looking for a happy and reliable person who can offer support for three hours every Friday from 1.00pm – 4.00pm. We meet in the TNG Community Centre based in Forest Hill that has been serving the community as a community venue to different groups for the last 5 years.

You would help to provide a welcoming space to elders from the local area. This is an informal film group that has met for at least four years. It always welcomes new members.

This is a very well established group and many of the members are the original members. It is a warm and supportive environment. Teas, coffees and biscuits create a welcoming atmosphere for all

Tasks/Duties Involved

Setting up:

A projector system is used – the volunteer will set up the film each week and put it away at the end of it. Preparing teas, coffees, biscuits, meeting and greeting the users, preparing the signing in book and ensuring the room is appropriately set up

Buying fresh milk and biscuits weekly (costs covered by the project)

During the group:

Socialising and talking for the first half hour with users, supporting new members to settle in, making introductions to the group

Washing cups and plates


Stack chairs

Sweeping the floor

Ensuring users leave the centre safely

Skills Required 

No previous experience needed. You should be happy to interact with people and be willing to learn how to set up the projector system.

You need to be vigilant and be happy to use your initiative.

We are very happy for volunteers who have initiative to speak with the group to see how they can develop the group – possibly arrange a social each month in addition to the weekly film club, to discuss ideas and support the group to see what else they would like to do as social activities on occasion (music groups, guest speakers during the session….. )

Commitment, punctuality and reliability is very important. A good sense of humour and a non-judgemental attitude is needed. Experience of working with older people is not necessary.

Training/Support Given

Volunteers will be supported by the Volunteer Co-ordinator and will be assigned an onsite supervisor. You will receive an induction and ongoing support.

Training will be offered by TNG and additional training in Safeguarding, Communication skills, basic first aid and other training opportunities can be accessed through other Lewisham organisations.
